Switzerland is an incredibly picturesque country. And very well-groomed. You drive along it, look out the window, and it seems that you are surrounded on all sides by elegant postcards and glossy posters. In most large cities (Zurich, Basel, Geneva) this is not so striking, despite the lakes and rivers, but the capital Bern, surrounded by hills and alpine meadows, is the epitome of medieval cuteness! The city is not only toy-like, but also rich and clean, and, presumably,safe. In a word, it’s a heavenly place, and I really want to dilute this sweetness with something dirty - as in the popular joke about a lover who hid in a perfume cabinet for a long time. In Bern, Beat Zeller and his company Voodoo Rhythm have been able to do this for thirty years.
Objectively and without much exaggeration, we can state that Voodoo Rhythm is the most unbridled and hooligan record company in Europe, and most likely in the world. their motto: Records to ruin any party. In practice, this means the following repertoire: primitive rock and roll and blues, garage psychedelia, hysterical punk and all other musical trash. Yes, "trash" is probably the key word! Zeller (b. 1967) has an artistic pseudonym - Reverend Beat-Man - and under this nickname he records music himself. The most famous of his several projects is a quartet with the simplest name The Monsters. They've been around since 1986, playing ferocious punk rock and recently releasing their eighth album (on Voodoo Rhythm, of course) called "You're class, I'm a trash.“ Unlike many socially and politically concerned punks, "Monsters" are exclusively interested in personal relationships. The hero of the song “Stranger for Me” is a lyrical hero himself.
THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY: Based in a small town and a small country, Voodoo Rhythm have spread their tentacles to various continents, including Japan and the United States. The Christian Family is a sarcastic American duo (Sister Anna - vocals, drums; Brother Daniel - guitar, vocals). They invented a unique style and named it appropriately – Gospel Punk, that is, “Bible Punk”! The songs are parodically blasphemous (“You Must Love” is a typical example); "The Rough and Primitive Sounds of a Christian Family" is their debut album.
BAD MOJOS: Let’s finish our acquaintance with Voodoo-punk with the third long-play by the Bern-Swiss trio Bad Mojos (can be translated as “Bad Forces”), entitled “Songs That Make You Want to Die.” This is already typical Ramones-style (but not at all fun; Switzerland, after all) punk rock, fast-paced, monotonous and laconically two minutes long - like this song “Get Out of the Way”.
BANG BANG BAND GIRL: Among the newest releases from Voodoo Rhythm, I noted for myself two of the most unusual. Firstly, there is a Chilean girl, Cheri Corleone, currently living in Rotterdam, Holland. I assume that she became a street musician: she performs alone; sings and plays all instruments at the same time (guitar, drum, electronics); 80 percent of the repertoire consists of cover versions of famous rock and rolls, from Elvis to the Troggs and Cramps. At the same time, the interpretations of the hits are very unusual - sometimes funny, sometimes ominous - and the few songs they composed themselves, including The Hand, are very good and defy genre definition. Sheri calls herself Bang Bang Band Girl, and the title of her first album is very long, and it is better to read it in the playlist.
NESTTER DONUTS: The second great newcomer is Nestter Donuts (real name Nestor Jose Lillo Fernandez) from the Spanish semi-resort city of Alicante. Either in truth, or according to legend, he is a gypsy, and, it is possible, also comes from street performers. However, he writes all the songs himself, and they, as they say, “rock out.” Nester Donut's album is called Flamenco Trash - and that's it! A mixture of arrogant rock and roll, flamenco rhythms and insinuating gypsy music is, of course, something... One might say, contagious, which is what the song Infection is about. Voodoo Rhythm is an enterprise, as I understand it, not so much a commercial one, but, as they say, “for the soul.” But, if we are heading for market success, then I would bet on “trash flamenco”.
