He worked as Garbageman, Record Dealer, Chocolate Manufacturer or Bike Messenger and besides composed music for the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, VOICE CRACK, Peter Kowald , Shelley Hirsch, Strotter Inst or Christian Wolfarth etc So as you may see his not a Typicle Voodoo Rhythm Artist that's why he IS! His one of the most prolific artists working in the border zones where performance and body art meet Improvisation and Noise. In his Sudden Infant Guise, Joke creates a unique blend of physical sound poetry and epileptic noise bursts, using contact microphones, loops, tapes and turntables. The Music is as minimal or back to the roots as it get’s, just from another angle of view, his music is very direct and comes along with at least 20 Tons of wierdness and RawPower. For this new album he collaborated with the One and Only Roli Mosimann who is one of the CO Founder of the New York No-Wave Revolution in the early 80's worked together with the Swans , New Order, Marilyn Manson or the Young Gods and Recorded that Album as a Trio together with Christian Weber (bass) and Alexandre Babel (drums) Joke Lanz is Doing the Elecronics and Loopings , and the Result is one of Voodoo Rhythm's most Brute and Destructive record ever. JOKE LANZ aka SUDDEN INFANT ist Extreme Body Culture Performance Art Noise und Blues Industrial in simpler Form. Joke wurde 1965 in Basel geboren und lebt heute in Berlin. Seid 1985 ist er aktiv mit unzähligen Bands wie Jaywalker, SchimpFluch-Gruppe , Catholic Boys in Heavy Leather, WAL wo er seine Hass/Liebe zur Extremen Körperkult Performance und den Brachialen Industrial Noise in einfachsten und eindrücklichsten Art und Weise zelebriert.
Er arbeitete ua als Müllmann, Schallplatten Verkäufer , Chocolatier oder Fahrrad Kurier und komponierte Musik für Filme und Theater oder auch für das Wiener Radio Symphony Orchester, die Schweizer Noise Pioniere VOICE CRACK, Peter Kowald , Shelley Hirsch, Strotter Inst oder Christian Wolfarth.
Wie man sieht ist das definitiv kein Typischer Voodoo Rhythm Künstler und eben genau deshalb ist er es, er ist Anders, er überrascht und hinterlässt dein Hirn im endlosen Chaos denn er Schreibt Songs wie es ein Blues Musiker machen würde : SUDDAN INFANT ist kraftvoll, direkt in die fresse und bleibt in deinem Hirn hängen und lässt dich nicht mehr los. Für das Album WÖLFLIS NIGHTMARE , gewidmet dem Berner Art Brut Künstler Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930) hat er zusammen mit den Schweizer Musikern Christian Weber (bass) und Alexandre Babel (drums) ROLI MOSIMANN
( Mitbegründer der New Yorker No-Wave Bewegung Anfangs 80'er produzierte the Swans New Order, Marilyn Manson the Young Gods etc ) aufgesucht und in seinem Studio in Polen das neue Album eingespielt, die heute wohl brutalste und destruktivste Voodoo Rhythm Platte.

Sudden Infant, the raw noise art and industrial blues project of Joke Lanz, has released an album titled Wölfli's Nightmare on Switzerland's blues trash and rock'n'roll label Voodoo Rhythm Records. Even during my first listen to this album I knew it was not the kind of music Voodoo Rhythm would usually release. But since Sudden Infant qualifies as dark, bizarre underground sounds with poetic madness and fractured story lines, it probably fits in quite well with Voodoo Rhythm's weird, dysfunctional family of bands and singer/songwriters. And, to my knowledge, Wölfli's Nightmare is the only animal of its kind in the Voodoo Rhythm stable other than the one-off industrial trash and electro noise album by Reverend Beat-Man & the Church of Herpes.
Wölfli's Nightmare's eleven songs feature Joke Lanz on contact microphones, loops, tapes and turntables, Christian Weber on bass, and Alexandre Babel on drums. Lanz also collaborated with Roli Mosimann (Swans, Wiseblood), a recognizable artist from the '80s no-wave movement in New York City. Together, these maverick music-makers and practitioners of noise pollution and strange poetry have put together an album whose songs, even if not the kind of sonic fare one's musical palette can typically appreciate, will affect one in some crazy way, staying with one like the receding imagery and emotional toll of an intense nightmare...or a piece of particularly strong artwork at an alternative gallery which deals largely with questionable subject matter, showcasing a handful of disturbing paintings from which one cannot look away, even if one feels like one should. And you will see exactly what I mean when you listen to this monster for the first time, with its sharp low-end, bursts of noise, minimalist percussion, mechanical components, and mighty vocal delivery.
Wölfli's Nightmare isn't so many musical layers arranged into whole compositions; rather, it is a more of a spiral downward into complete musical insanity and extreme art construction, where it gets very dark and very weird, but clearly that's where Sudden Infant is at his best. All of this is in evidence when one experiences songs like "Crane Boy II," "Endless Night," "Girl," "Human Fly," and "Tandoori Chicken Scooter IV."
Sudden Infant's Joke Lanz was born in Basel, Switzerland, but is now based out of Berlin, Germany. Over the years Lanz has been involved in a number of punk, hardcore and experimental noise projects, like Jaywalker, SchimpFluch-Gruppe, Catholic Boys in Heavy Leather, and WAL. Sudden Infant is simply the latest chapter in his artistic efforts, and it is certainly a record to revisit the ol' player now and again, especially when one is intoxicated on one's substance of choice and in the mood for peculiar soundscapes in which there are built crumbling towers of words like decaying teeth in a mouth spewing forth that which makes perfect sense and yet no sense whatsoever, which is both impossibly real and yet surreal, and which lies at the crossroads where poetics and philosophy meet for a drink as the sun sets on Europe at the end of the day.

Que la brut(al)e existence d'Adolf Wölfli ait inspiré Joke Lanz n'a rien de surprenant. Il y a en effet de quoi faire en piochant dans l'enfance de l'artiste (abandonné par son père), ses visions et son long enfermement. Pour mieux se balader dans le « cauchemar », JK a invité deux de ses compatriotes : le bassiste Christian Weber et le batteur Alexandre Babel.
En cette compagnie, on retrouve du plaisir à se plonger dans les textes des « chansons ». Car c'est une histoire terrible que nous raconte avec autorité Sudden Infant... Celle d'un enfant qui rêve d'être conducteur de grue pour toucher le ciel et qui... (mais dois-je dévoiler la fin ?). Voilà en tout cas un disque-livre qui vous met le frisson (je veux dire : vous l'injecte direct !). Comme toujours dans la veine indus / noise, Joke Lanz excelle, et ici il signe une performance où les claques pleuvent, les coups se répètent et leurs répétitions vous saignent à blanc. Bien sûr, ce sang est noir, puisque c'est le sang du cauchemar.

No Wave aus der Schweiz von einem Veteranen der Body Performance/ Industrial-Szene. Joke Lanz ist Sudden Infant. Circa 80 Veröffentlichungen seit Anfang der 80er .Gealtert, aber nicht auf die sanfte Art. Produziert von Roli Mosiman ( Swans ) führt die Dekonstruktion von Klängen zu brachialen hypnotischen Exorzismen. Sein Körper ist das wichtigste Instrument, verfremdet , gepeinigt, durch unzählige Effekte gejagt. Das Stahlschlagzeug treibt den Takt dieser abgetakelten Galeere an, der Bass kratzt an der Maschine. Der Leib ist Maschine. Industrial Blues in einer dem Untergang geweihten Ehe von frühen Einstürzenden Neubauten und den Cramps vor der Zersetzung. Mit der Energie von Birthday Party. Ein untypisches Release für Voodoo Rhythm, ist es doch das härteste und sperrigste Album im Programm. *Voodoo Rhythm

SUDDEN INFANT : Wölfli's nightmare (CD, Voodoo Rhythm Records - www.voodoorhythm.com) Voici certainement l'un des disques les plus inattendus du label Voodoo Rhythm. Sudden Infant est un activiste de la scène noise industrielle berlinoise, même s'il est de nationalité suisse. Pourtant, quand mister Beat-Man voit Sudden Infant pour la première fois sur scène, il perçoit chez lui un côté blues qui l'autorise à demander à l'artiste d'enregistrer, justement, un album de blues. Le résultat est là, avec ce "Wolfli's nightmare". En fait, du blues industriel, puisque Sudden Infant, fidèle à lui-même, déclame des textes incantatoires et hallucinés, hurle et éructe comme un aliéné ou un damné, sur des loops électroniques déstructurés, ça, c'est le côté industriel, accompagné, parfois, d'une section rythmique pachydermique,
ça, c'est le côté noise. Au milieu de tout ça, on peut entendre des samples de cuivres free-jazz, de violoncelle improvisé, de bruitages divers et variés, des machines en pleine révolution existentielle. Et je dois dire que la chose a un côté indéniablement attirant. On est évidemment à des années-lumière des 12 mesures syndicales, mais ce bric-à-brac sonore nous hypnotise, nous prend dans ses filets,
et ne nous lâche qu'à la fin du disque, 3/4 d'heure plus tard. En fait, s'il y a effectivement du blues dans cet album, c'est dans la seule reprise du disque qu'il faut le chercher, le "Human fly" des Cramps, au traitement malsain et psychotique, qui rappelle, peut-être plus que l'original, le film "La mouche", celui de Kurt Neumann en 1958, avec Vincent Price, qui avait inspiré Lux Interior à l'époque. Entre Einstürzende Neubauten et Marilyn Manson, entre les Melvins et Throbbing Gristle, entre Frank Zappa et Kraftwerk. Y a de la place dans la niche.
