Depesche aus London: Scuzzy Psychedelik und mentalen Cajun für alle!
Selbst im Underground gibt es noch einen Underground. Wie einem Vulkan gelingt es diesem, immer mal wieder einen Schwall Lava auszustossen und damit die ganze Welt in Aufregung zu versetzen. Ein Hoch an den Reverend Beat-Man from Bern!
Wild, ungehemmt und ungebremst - Heart Attack Alley
Manchmal bekomme ich Post aus Bern. Das neueste Briefchen im unverkennbaren Umschlag von Voodoo Rhythm Records und Reverend Beat-Man beginnt so: «Hi Hanspeter «Düsi», Wir haben eine neue Veröffentlichung am 12. Oktober, es ist ein Trio, das ich in Neuseeland getroffen habe als ich dort am Touren war, sie haben mir mein Hirn weggeblasen und das Herz in Stücke gerissen...» Er habe die Kombo umgehend auf Euro-Tour geschickt, fährt Beat-Man fort, und mit ihr ein Album aufgenommen: «Es ist etwas zwischen liebe machen und eine faust ins gesicht kriegen und irgendwie wiederspiegeln sie das heute Neu Seeland perfekt...Stay Trash, Beat-Man Zeller» Die Band heisst Heart Attack Alley, das Album «Living in Hel». Feurig-freudiger Rockabilly-Groove-Blues mit viel Dreck am Stecken. Ein mächtiger Aufsteller sowieso.
Ja, das ist noch wahre Post! Weitab vom Fliessbandgeschreibsel konventioneller Plattenfirmen. Eindeutig auch kein Korrekturprogramm auf dem Compi. Dafür Herzblut so viel wie der Aetna und ein untrüglicher Riecher für «Stil» in einer musikalischen Umgebung, wo Kategorien wie «guter» und «schlechter» Geschmack längst aufgehoben sind. Eben, Rockabilly, Rock'n'Roll, rauhe Psychedelik, Blues und andere «alte» Musikformen aus den renitenten, rebellischen Randgebieten der Zivilisation. Ein Bereich, wo in geringeren Händen Groove, Gitarren-Soli und Texte längst in den Granit der Unveränderlichkeit gemeisselt zu sein scheinen – hier schafft es Beat- Man, weltweit just die Künstler zu erschnüffeln, welche in den Höhlen solcher Ur-Musik die Spinnennetze wegblasen und die Lebensgeister von Robert Johnson, Buddy Bolden und Link Wray wieder zur Auferstehung bringen.

Seit zwanzig Jahren gibt es Voodoo Rhythm Records.Das Programm umfasst dutzende von Alben, allesamt in grossartige Sleeves gepackt, deren Grafik irgendwo zwischen Robert Crumb, Thunfischdosen-Designs aus den Sixties und frühen Hillbilly-Platten liegt. Vielleicht hat man von der rührigen Unterstützungsaktion gehört, mit der andere Schweizer Musiker dem Reverend vor ein paar Jahren unter die Arme griffen, als dieser mit seiner Selbsthilfeorganisation für Musiker, die sonst nirgends veröffentlich würden, ausgerechnet mit der Suisa in den Clinch geriet, der Organisation, welche die Copyright-Interessen von Musikern schützen sollte. Zwanzig Jahre für ein Indie-Label ist beachtlich. Und beachtlich ist auch die Tatsache, dass die Arbeit vom international spriesst. Bands, die bei ihm zuhause sind, schaffen es immer mal wieder selbst nach London. Die enthusiastische Sprache des Beat-Man steckt eben an, der Töff kommt in Schwung, wenn einer aus dem Bauch redet. Gerade ist in England eine Band beachtlich gross im Gespräch, deren ersten Werke ebenfalls auf seinem Mist gewachsen sind: die Genfer Cajun-Punk-Truppe Mama Rosin nämlich. Nach einigen erfolgreichen Festivalauftritten tritt sie heute Abend im Jazz Café auf, um dann mit der bestsellenden Folk-Big-Band Bellowhead auf Tournee zu gehen. Ihr neues Album «Bye Bye Bayou» (produziert in New York von Jon Spencer) provoziert dabei überall Superkritiken: «Dreizehn Songs in 35 Minuten, kein Füllmaterial, kein Nachlassen, keine Konkurrenz.» Heisst es etwa im Independent on Sunday.
Fast noch erstaunlicher ist indes die Meldung, dass die weiterhin zum Stall von Voodoo Rhythm gehörenden Berner Oberländer Roy & The Devil's Motorcycle mit ihrem wüsten, einzigartigen Psychedelik-Garage-Rockabilly anfangs November im Vorprogramm von Spiritualized auf Tournee gehen werden. Und im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Support-Bands mussten sie sich nicht einkaufen. Sie bekommen richtiggehend eine Gage!

Karl dig & play his harmonica with perfect science & excellent + brightly harmonica sound which remind me the best of Little Walter's bluesman voodoo experience . Their raw sound get primitive music ' spirit between The Cramps & brand new music trend . Best tracks " Don't waste my time "/ " Too hot blues "/ " Slave to your mojo " are pure blues delight stomp. " Personnaly i like next song too " Cryin' " 'coz this cut get magic touch a la The Canned Heat (when Al , Bob , Henri 're on the boogie blues top !). Heart Attack Alley ...trio must dig addiction to overseas , they get the blues obsession with savoir-faire . Extra + Intense vibrations - emotions emerge from their soul . Blues never die !.

Gönnen wir uns bei diesem tristen Wetter noch ein bisschen Blues: Reverend Beatman, unser Lieblings-Rumpelrocker aus Bern, hat auf einer Solo-Tournee durch Neuseeland dieses einheimische Trio kennengelernt und war von ihm so angetan, dass er dessen Album nun auf seinem Label hat machen lassen. Schöne Geschichte. Die Musik ist dann live aber sicher knackiger als auf dem Album, denn auf Konserve klingen sie recht konventionell nach Mitwipp- und Mitstampf-Blues, in dem die Sängerin solide singt und der Mundharmonikaspieler unentwegt Mundharmonika spielt. Ist nicht das beste Voodoo-Rhythmen-Album aller Zeiten. Aber zieht euch die Band live rein: am 20.10. im Veka in Glarus und am 21.10. im Viadukt in Zürich.

PREFACE:
I've been excited for this record since before I even knew they were making it.
I was musing, as it is often my tendency to do, the other day, that as a DJ to varying extents for pretty much my entire adult life I have taken a different path to many people who are, as some people call them, "career deejays" and for many years now have been an almost constant feature at various live gigs in various dark and dingy underground shows. For me, the much of the joy of being a DJ comes from discovery of new music; crate-digging is a vital part of the craft. And, some years ago, it struck me that the place you could hear and discover new music at it's earliest incarnation was obviously the first time that a band played the song at their gig.
Running Cheese on Toast and sharing my views, experiences and opinions of these shows is, in fact, DJing. Bumping into that guy I haven't seen in a few years this afternoon in Grey Lynn and him asking me what I'm listening to and me telling him about a New York based rapper (Angel Haze) is DJing. And making a special trip today to Southbound Records to buy my copy of this record on glorious red vinyl despite receiving a promo copy of the CD in the mail just hours before is DJing.
I fell in love with the power, rawness and emotion of Heart Attack Alley the very first time I ever saw them, although I confess to not being able to recall the precise date, time or venue of that very first spark now, having seen them play many, many times since and never, not once, ever being in any way in the slightest bit disappointed, but always leaving the show wishing for just a little bit more. As it should be. And so, yes I think I have been excited for this record since before it was even enough songs to be a record.
REVIEW:
Heart Attack Alley are a powerhouse of a band. Their set-up, for those not familiar, is deceptively simple. There is no drummer or drums; instead a steady percussive thud of Karl's amplified foot stomp meets Kristal's pulsating rhythm guitar. Karl's harmonica dances a deadly dance with the powerful, raw and darkly sweet vocals of Caoimhe Macfehin.
The record kicks off at full steam; Karls harmonica dallies with Caoimhe's dusky and gutsy vocals on live favorite Too Hot Blues before quickly following with the gut-wrenchingly good Cryin' – when Caoimhe practically inhales the words "You'll fall in love again" every single heartbreak you've ever experienced returns to you again intensified into less than a heartbeat – and it's a wonderful, wonderful feeling. And the dark sweetness of her voice comes to the fore in My Beating Heart – such a painfully beautiful song.
Title track Living In Hell sounds like what I imagine a western funeral might sound like; Karl's harmonica is a circling vulture waiting for the final life-breath to expire from the songs protagonist.
Other ho-down live favorites Slave To Your Mo and Spit It Out survive recording translation to perfectly capture their live essence and excitement. "Well y'know you don't love me honey; but I got the sweetest cakes in town" / "When the night time comes I know you don't want to go" Caoimhe wryly respectively observes.
This its rhythm and blues. It's raw, dark, vital and the best thing in the mutha-fucking world. Heart Attack Alley is why I have always been, and will never stop being a DJ.

Attackieren Herz und Knochen, die sich bewegen müssen, ob sie wollen oder nicht.
Heart Attack Alley aus Auckland Neu Seeland trafen sich 2009 zur wöchentlichen Blues Session auf Kristals Veranda, Kristal G spielte die Gitarre so düster, simpel und schwarz, wie sie nur Poison Ivy von den Cramps hätte spielen können, dazu Dr. Karl Stevens (ja er ist ein richtiger Doktor und ja er spielte in Supergroove, einer Schwedischen Crossover Hip Hop Band ) Mundharmonika sowie Caoimhes Gesang, der heiß und voluminös wie ein Strom Lava daher fließt und dich zu Stein erstarren lässt, den sie dann mit den messerscharfen Texten in tausend Teile zerschneidet. Zusammen sind sie ein Power Trio, das seinesgleichen sucht. In Neuseeland schon lange keine Unbekannten mehr, spielten sie doch unter anderem mit Wanda Jackson. Voodoo Rhythm (www.voodoorhythm.com) hat sie 2011 auf Europatour geschickt, wo sie in Matt Brodin's Outside Inside Studio in Italien ihr erstes Album aufgenommen haben – und spätestens nach dieser Veröffentlichung sollten sie in aller Munde sein.
UNDER THE RADAR ( NZ)
Regardless of the lens you frame them through Auckland blues trio Heart Attack Alley and the thirteen songs collected on Living In Hell (their debut album) feel like, at crux, an exercise in doing a lot with a little. For example, take the band configuration: Karl Steven - harmonica and stomp box, Kristal Gallagher - guitar, Caoimhe Macfehin - vocals and tambourine. Working with earthy minimalist percussion, wild eyed voodoo guitar and harmonica, and Macfehin's rich, olde time vocal delivery, they create a fuzzed out take on garage rock infused blues. One which while paying homage to the original deep south traditions and motifs surrounding their form, also feels saliently true to the contemporary denim and leather Grey Lynn centric music scene they hail from.
Built from a small set of parts, the overall sound expressed across Living In Hell is huge and infectious, probably not huge and infectious enough to actually wake the dead, but huge and infectious enough to encourage event promoters and music writers to throw those sort of statements into the mix. And again, falling in line with the concept of "doing a lot with a little," since forming around two years ago, Heart Attack Alley have squeezed a lot of juice out of their music. Multiple national tours, multiple European tours, a seven inch record, a bootleg CD and now Living In Hell. An astonishing album, Living In Hell was recorded to tape at Inside Outside Studios in Italy by an old school audio engineer with thirty one Lightin Hopkins records; then released on cult Swiss label Voodoo Rhythm, for twenty years now the best in the business for primitive rock'n'roll and chainsaw massacre garage punk. With this fast momentum has come an almost occult fan following.
Speaking generally, this can be attributed to two factors. Firstly, Heart Attack Alley's impressively engaging stage show. Steven literally looks like the funkiest skeleton on the planet, and Gallagher and Macfehin both have attitude, sass and style for days. More importantly however, the songs they deliver live with such flair, really do stand up recorded. Steven's work on the stomp box generates perfectly primal rhythms, which worked in tandem with Gallagher's alternately fuzzy and shiny guitar lines, create easy and engaging grooves with a genuine unrestrained cool. Matched up with his evocative harmonica work and Macfehin's impressively powerful (and yet dynamic) voice, the styling of their soundworld is spot on.
Where things go to the next level is when the trio work collaboratively on MacFehin's lyrics. Tackling conditions of the heart in a manner that fits perfectly with their constituent influences, the outcome is a new spectral colour within the metaphorical sonic prism of blues, garage and fuzz informed rock music. On Living In Hell, Heart Attack Alley express blues stories which feel unique to New Zealand, yet still very much part of a wider international continuum and conversation. I look forward to hearing the influence of this record on musicians from ports overseas in the years to come.
