BOB LOG III "MY SHIT IS PERFECT" LP: VR1254 (EAN CODE 7640111769569 ) CD: VRCD54 (EAN CODE: 7640111769675) Tom Waits : "And then there's this guy named Bob Log, you ever heard of him? He's this little kid — nobody ever knows how old he is — wears a motorcycle helmet and he has a microphone inside of it and he puts the glass over the front so you can't see his face, and plays slide guitar. It's just the loudest strangest stuff you've ever heard. You don't understand one word he's saying. I like people who glue macaroni on to a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That's what I aspire to basically." ENGLISH Bob Log III in his blue full-body Fonzie suit and a face-shield wired with a headset microphone is one of the best, fastest and strangest American Delta Blues Slide Guitar player of today Bob Log III was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona. Then Tucson AZ and now Melbourne Australia "You take a guitar, turn it up and have a good time" in the early 90's he Formed together with Thermos Malling the incredible DOO RAG who's pioneered the whole Blues 'punk' or Even Tekkno Scene at this time, the Band Split off and Bob Log continued alone a the One Man Band, Touring all over the Globe North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, Mexico, and Iceland. he acquired a kick-drum and a homemade foot cymbal which he custom-outfitted with a kick pedal of its own. These instruments, combined with his slide guitar work, distorted telephone microphone vocals, and Boom-Chik-a-Boom drum machine accompaniment, form the framework on which Bob Log constructs his songs. Log describes his on-stage setup in the song "One Man Band Boom," introducing himself to the audience as, "I'm Bob Log the third, one-man band, Tucson, Arizona. Heyeeeh! Lemme introduce the band to ya. On cymbals, left foot. Over here on the bass drum we got right foot. Shut up! This is my left hand that does all the slide work, right hand does the pickin'. My mouth hole does most o' the talkin'. And you're looking at my finger." |

Bob Log III hat ja auch den Klassiker "I'm a professional, God damn it. I live in a car." abgelassen. This is Blues Trash right in your face! the dreaded press (usa) Bob Log III takes every cliché about blues musicians and throws them through a bar-room window... before dragging them back inside and buying them a drink to make up for it. My Shit Is Perfect is his fifth solo album after parting ways with the other half of Delta-rock duo Doo Rag, and if you've not encountered the man's work before, you'd be forgiven for wondering what the hell is going on.I think it only fair to say straight away (and with no disrespect intended to Mr Log's musicianship, which is as impressive as it is utterly unique) that Bob Log III needs to be seen live to be fully understood; descriptions are merely words, and cannot do it justice.I believe the same has been said of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, with whom Log has toured, and there's a common ground there - both acts use the blues as the jump-off point for building their own oddball mythology. And it's quite some mythology, too. On stage, Bob Log III wears a shiny silver jumpsuit of uncertain age and unnerving tightness, and a motorcycle helmet. With a smoked plastic faceplate. Which has a telephone handset glued into it. Which acts as Log's hands-free microphone. You're probably thinking "that probably looks pretty weird". Well, you're underestimating. He's a genuine one-man band, too; at the core of his sound are the rollicking slide-and-twang grooves he wrings out of a huge old arch-top guitar, but he has an array of foot-powered percussion and drum machines as well, producing little avalanches of bangs, booms and thwacks that sound like they're struggling to keep up with the man's furious right hand picking style. As can be heard on My Shit Is Perfect, the lyrics are predominantly a vehicle for Bob Log III's larger-than-life persona, whose main interests are his own music and instruments, ladies and alcohol... preferably all three at once. In other words, and at the risk of sounding uncharitable, Bob Log III is a novelty act, a performance art prospect that has to be witnessed in the flesh to be appreciated. To a neophyte, My Shit Is Perfect will probably sound like some obscure side-project based on getting very drunk and/or stoned before attempting to sing through a CB radio set while beat-juggling with fuzzy old 78rpm blues classics; it's intriguing and wryly amusing, but probably not the sort of thing you'd go out of your way for after a chance hearing. But to the previously initiated, My Shit Is Perfect will be a memento of a night at some hot and packed little venue where some loon in a jumpsuit and a crash-helmet played a mean guitar, rambled on like a hillbilly in jimson-weed season and put a smile on every face in the room. I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy My Shit Is Perfect just because you've never seen Bob Log III play live. What I'm saying is you should make a point of going to see him play live, and then buy the album. On the bass drum, right foot. Right hand: the pickin'. Left hand: the slide work. Mouth hole does most o' the talkin'. This finger: an asshole.' INSOUND (USA) My Shit Is Perfect smells of past Doo Rag brilliance, finding Log showcasing his slide guitar virtuosity, unusual but butt-shaking polyrhythmic beatitude, and, as loved and expected, his demented take on humanity. How does he do all of the amazing things he does? It is truly mystifying, even to him. The album's cover concept: Colorforms. The cover comes as a blank stage with stick-ons of Log (cut up into appendages and trunk) and his usual pals by his side (inflatable raft, party accessories, etc.), enabling the owner to create and recreate his or her own cover!Performing behind a motorcycle helmet, Bob Log III has garnered curiosity and speculation as to his true identity. Is he truly the man that fronted Doo Rag in the early '90s? Is he Andy Kaufman? Or thrill-seeker Evel Knievel? All are valid questions, and questions that Log promises to address on tour after My Shit Is Perfect is released ROCKTIMES (D) Robert Reynolds III, alias Bob Log III... abgedrehter geht es nimmer. SOUNDFLAT (D) Here's the man who started it all, the gran seniori, the don, the big daddy of one man bands - BOB LOG III gdammit! Eons ago there was a band like none before and none since. They played fierce amphetamine drenched blues punk with demented vigor, merging an urban skid row punk attitude with the archaic sounds of the Mississippi Delta and they were to be known the world round as Doo Rag. Out of this crazed slide blues punk mayhem evolved a 21st century space age Mississippi Fred Mc Dowell in a full body cannonball suit sporting a pilots helmet with a built in telephone - this creature was introduced to our planet as BOB LOG III! He's this little Kid - nobody ever knows how old he is - wears a motorcycle helmet and he has a microphone inside of it and he puts the glass over the front so you can't see his face, and plays slide guitar. It's just the loudest strangest stuff you've ever heard. You don't understand one word he's saying. I like people who glue macaroni onto a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That's what I aspire to be basically."Sagt alles aus. Blues Punk meets Slide Guitar. TSUNAMI MAG (AUS) Masked bluesman Bob Log III has always been something of an enigmatic figure, and if you're looking for further examples of this then his brand-spanking new album 'My Shit is Perfect' doesn't disappoint. His lo-fi one-man-band aesthetic is surprisingly intriguing and despite delivering authentic swampy blues, there are enough idiosyncrasies to impress the more hardened critics amongst us. The bizarre, time-signature defying breakdown, 808 claps and snare of opening track 'Goddamn Sounds Good' blatantly oppose the traditional stylings one would expect to find on a record like this. The manic bluegrass stomp that follows grows crazier by the second and offers evidence enough that the man is not entirely normal. Who knows what exactly what he looks like beneath that somewhat intimidating helmet of his but either way one can rest assured – it's the face of a rather smug-looking talent indeed (Greg Reason). THE DWARF (AUS) "Woo! Happy Birthday Baby! Unh!" – So says Bob Log III on this album's title track, and the badass hopped-up blues guitar playing on this album will make you believe it. Recorded mostly at his house in Thornbury, Melbourne, this latest musical outpouring from Bob showcases some neat twists on his (surely, by now) familiar schtick of down-tuned fingerstyle slide guitar and a wild mix of programmed and foot-pedalled drums, distorted telephone vocals emanating from a dark helmet, his one-piece suit bedazzling as he is borne aloft on a rubber dinghy. Whilst all this is obviously entertaining, the novelty of his act belies a guy who is schooled in the North Mississippi blues of Fred McDowell and has infused his playing with a hefty dose of flat out rock a la AC/DC and Motorhead. Opener Goddamn Sounds Good sets the scene: "Turn up my fucking guitar/ Goddamn, Sounds Good!" It is Bob's Silvertone stylings that have pride of place in the mix, duking it out with his frenetic kick drum while the vocals sit low enough that if you wanted to know what he was singing you'd have to buy a six-pack and make a night of it. This track is classic Bob, guitar party music, but a few tracks in things start to get a bit weirder still, and it's these songs that make for a more compelling listen. Bump Pow! Bump Bump Bump Pow! Bump Pow! Bump Bump Bump Baby! Bump Pow! Bump Bump Bump Pow! Bump Pow! Bump Bump Bump is one such, the title of the song serving for both lyrical and rhythmical content, creating a wonderfully deranged groove, and Manipulate Your Figments (Serge Remix) gets downright elastic, it's droning porch riff bolstered by a slippery hip hop break. The standout track is Bumper Car, the spare percussion and the unmistakable sound of an extremely cheap guitar (or possibly a similarly priced ukelele) giving this weird little ditty a certain op-shop charm, and the odd progression wanders into Ween territory whilst exuding an unmistakable waft of Bob. The up-tempo instrumentals Bucktooth Potato and Shinkansen Teh! bring the guitar to the fore, the latter a fierce workout against a drum-machine busting out beats that wouldn't be out of place in an early Metallica record – my first taste of thrash-blues, and I've gotta say it's invigorating. Bob signs off with an acoustic revamp of Goddamn Sounds Good which does what is says, capping an album which offers many distinct shades of Log – whilst there's nothing as immediately hooky as Log Bomb this record has what it takes to kick a party in the pants. |
