"I started listening to country music when I was very broken hearted, with a gun in my hand. By the time I was ready to pull the trigger, I realised that I just made a song, so I put that gun away and took my guitar. Country is like the Blues, it comes from Inside, so it does not matter if it comes from Nashville Tokyo or from Bern, Country is Telling music with mostly Acoustic Instruments.. the only thing Zeno does Different is he Speeds it up and ad some sick lyrics to it |

Zweites Album von ZENO TORNADO und seinen BONEY GOOGLE BROTHERS. Mit ihrer Mischung aus Country, Bluegrass und rauhem Rock'n'Roll gibt es auch hier wieder strange Songs über die Wiedrigkeiten des Lebens, wie etwa bei "Ain't Love Hell", "Dead End Girl", "Useless Tools" oder "Time To Loose".
Die Besetzung mit Banjo, Mandoline, Steel und Slide-Guitar, sowie Geige, ist absolut perfekt, und auch ZENO TORNADO's Gesang klingt bei den insgesamt 14 Songs eine ganze Spur abgeklärter als noch auf dem Debüt.
Country hat schon lange nichts mehr mit Nashville zu tun, wie der Blues kommt Country aus dem Innern, egal ob er aus Nashville, Tokio oder eben Bern kommt.
Das Album wurde wie das Debüt in den genialen Star Track Studios von Olifr M GUZ aufgenommen, auch Gastmusiker waren mit dabei; Delaney Davidson (The Dead Brothers) an der Singenden Säge und Chessy Weafer am Gesang.
Zeno gibt dem Genre eine junge wilde Note, er haucht ihm mehr Tempo ein und würzt ihn mit herrlich eigenwilligen Texten.

Crackpot punkin' countrybilly bluegrass, or grass-guzzling rockabilly blues, or rock chomping blue movie crack smoking pot growing hillbilly hound dogging country. From Switzerland. As you do. But of course how the hell else did Country music end up in Tennessee but via the original shit-kickers from Europe? You gotta kick a whole haybarn full o' shit to get across the Atlantic ah guess. I wouldn't have it any other way. And neither, of course, should you. These songs are mini-epics set amidst wide open plains whether in Montana or somewhere in your own dehydrated demented delirious dreamlands, bean-tin belches sprouting like spur-shredding campfire farts powering warped wagon-trains way out west for a hoe-down on the edge of the highway to hell, highwater and hangovers...tales of dames, damn dames, damnation and damned dames, drugs, drink n' despair...yeah yeah yeah like every lonesome and penniless cowboy wending his woe filled way to the ends of a whiskey bottle brought down by the ways of women from Wyoming to Withington. But Mr Zeno zaps right into the collective unconscious of each and every cowboy dude in the world in a tradition true to Hank and Steve Earle through to Eddie Spaghetti. And I'm sho' as Hell sure that Hank never did it this way. This is sinicious enough to send Jerry Lee to Baptist church right away. Don't try and stop him. Just let him go, while you kick back with a bottle and let old Zeno kick up a storm.

If you like me are tired all that bogus 'Americana/Alt Country' (most sound like indie whiner shit to me) that 'hip' zines like Mojo are constantly hyping, then Zeno Tornado is the ultimate antidote! Their follow-up to the sensational "Dirty Dope Infected Bluegrass Hillbilly Hobo XXX Country Music" is just as amazing honky honk bluegrass mayhem as the barnyard hellraisers' debut. 14 cornfed ditties about booze, broads & misery packed with fantastic pickings on fiddle, banjo, lap steel and mandolin. Fuck Nashville, Switzerland is the country wonderland of the world!

ジャーマン・ヘルビリー・バンドの待望のセカンド。Zenoのボーカルを中心にバンジョー、マンドリン、フィドル、スチ－ル・ギター等をフューチャーしたブルーグラス～カントリー・テイストのサウンドを展開していますが、そこは Voodoo Rhtyhm なので、随所に毒気がちりばめられたSICKな仕上がり。のどかな雰囲気の裏に潜むブラックなユーモアが魅力でしょう。Very Nice!

You won't believe it, but Zeno Tornado and his friends are a real hillbilly bluegrass band. Genuine Swiss cowboys! Far out! One can take it seriously or not, but fact is that is an awesome CD. Top quality entertainment! Wild kick-ass bluegrass with traces of garage and punkrock energy. Best thing about this release is that the song writing has that 'hard-to-pin-down-something-extra' which not only makes many of these tracks potential hits, it also takes the band beyond the limitations which 'naturally' come with every genre. A must for all fans of garage-trash and hi-energy bluegrass.

Country macht Spass. Auch wenn es nur aus dem Grund ist, den der jetzige Country-Produzent Olifr Guz zu seinen Rockzeiten besang: «Im Alter beginnt man sich für Country-Musik zu interessieren.» Der Berner Zeno Tornado ist ein wunderbares Beispiel dafür. In den Achtzigerjahren spielte er Gitarre in der Berner Punkband B.U.R.P. und entdeckte irgendwann, dass Country-Legenden wie John-ny Cash und Hank Williams durchaus Ähnliches mitzuteilen hatten wie er. Darüber hinaus wussten sie dem Ernst des Lebens heiteren Stiefelträger- und Kuhtreiber-Humor entgegenzusetzen. Und Punk-Helden legitimierten durch die Zusam-menarbeit mit Country-Stars den Sprung ins andere Lager. So wie das 1994 der ehemalige Dead-Kennedys-Sänger Jello Biafra mit Mojo Nixon ein ganzes Album lang getan hat.
Bei Zeno war der Wechsel zu Country mit einem Drama verbunden: «Ich habe angefangen, Country-Musik zu hören, als ich vor lauter Liebeskummer meinem Leben ein Ende setzen wollte. Ich hielt den Revolver schon in der Hand, als mir ein Lied einfiel. Ich legte die Waffe weg und nahm die Gitarre in die Hand.» So jedenfalls erzählt es der Berner in seiner offiziellen Biographie. Mit Bestimmtheit die Wahrheit sagt Zeno, wenn er meint: «Country kommt direkt aus dem Herzen, und mit meinen nicht ganz jugendfreien Texten dazu wird diese Musik richtig spannend.» Vor zwei Jahren erschien Zenos Debütalbum. Zeno Tornado and The Boney Google Brothers nennt sich die Band und «Dirty Dope Infected Blue Grass and Hillbilly Hobo XXX Country Music» der Albumtitel in voller Länge. In der alternativen Country-Szene Europas stiess das Werk auf helle Begeisterung. Das wird auch mit dem zweiten Album der Fall sein, das dieser Tage erschienen ist. Es heisst «Lover of Your Dreams», ist beim auf solche Musik spezialisierten Berner Label Voodoo Rhythm erschienen. Es bietet wie schon der Erstling lüpfig-witzige Bluegrass- und Country-Musik mit zynischen Texten.****

„Kick Ass Blue Grass" und drunter läuft gar nichts! Schon mit ihrem grossartigen Erstling ‚Dirty Dope Infected Blue Grass Hillbilly XXX Country Music' hat die Berner Formation auf beeindruckende Weise gezeigt, dass Blue Grass-Country nicht nur etwas für alte Männer ist, sondern auch dem jungen Rock- und Punkpublikum gefallen kann, ohne dass es von Nöten wäre, sich irgendwelchen Crossover-Kompromissen zu ergeben. ZENO TORNADO und seine Mannen spielen traditionellen Country, aber sie haben Power im Arsch und der Punk schlägt in ihrem Herz und das dringt auch durch die herzergreifendste Ballade. „Country is like the Blues, it comes from the inside, so it doesn't matter if it comes from Nashville, Tokyo or Bern". Als Gäste dabei sind DELANEY DAVIDSON (THE DEAD BROTHERS) und CHESSY WEAVER (ex-PHON ROLL).

Zeno Tornado is back. Wer dachte, der Erol Flynn des Blue Grass wäre nur auf einer CD gefährlich und messerscharf, darf sich getäuscht sehen und wieder setzen. Besser gesagt hinsetzen, denn "LOVER OF YOUR DREAMS" ist wiederum erstaunlich gut geworden und lädt ein, sich einmal zurückzulehnen und genau zu zuhören, bevor man sich ein Bier aufmacht und dazu tanzt! Besser und fester im Stil-Sattel sitzen Zeno und seine Mannen mittlerweile, das viele „Live" spielen ist wohl nicht in der Jacke (oder dem Hut) hängen geblieben, sondern hat vielmehr den Weg in souveränes und so vielseitiges Songwriting geebnet, wie es seinesgleichen sucht.
Verrückte Texte, abgedrehte Arrangements und gute Musiker - alle im Country Hillbilly Bluegrass Style haben hier 14 Songs zusammengeschrieben, die nur warten darauf getanzt zu werden. Hier und da gibt es Gastmusiker, z.B. für die Drums/Besen, die singende Säge (schaurig schön!) oder die weibliche Stimme (Chessy Weaver) in „Shame", eine abschliessend schönes Duett, aber die meisten Songs kommen mit der Zeno Standard-Instrumentierung aus: Gitarre, Banjo, Fiddle, Mandoline, Lap- Steel Gitarre, und Contra Bass und das gibt "LOVER OF YOUR DREAMS" eine schön erdige Atmosphäre. „Zeno is a madman, but a good one!!" With "Lover of your dreams", Zeno Tornado and The Boney Google Brothers follow up their impressive debut CDLP, by continuing to prove they are arguably one of (if not) the most underrated modern honky tonky country groups around today. It's probably due in part to their European roots and the fact that the band has not been able to tour the southern states of the USA that they'r enot betetr-known. It's in the US where Zeno Tornado should develop a keen following, given his take on the genre. "Lover of Your Dreams" features 14 tracks and for fans of the likes of Wayne 'The Train' Hancock and Hank III, songs like "Out of Control", "Home Sweet Home", "Party", "Riding" and "Broken Wings" should find immediate favour. The band is in killer form throughout. On their debut CD, Zeno explored mostly personal lyrical content and this continues here in "Don't You Fall in Love With Me", "Misery" and "Shame" (featuring guest vocalist Cheesy Weaver) the best examples. "Lover of Your Dreams" is a solid follow-up effort from Zeno Tornado and The Boney Google Brothers and builds on the unique position of the band in underground European music.- Simon Li |
