Mit einem Fuss in der Heutigen zeit liebäugelt er mit Musik der Vergan- genheit, und trifft trotzdem den Nerv der Zeit, als Gast-Musiker hatte er diesesmal Walter Daniels verpflichtet der ihm die harmonika spielt. Musi- ker wie Jimmie Rodgers, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Doctor Ross, oder Don Van Vliet sind große Vorbilder für ihn. GONZO CIRCUS (NL) John Schooley heeft reeds een indrukwekkend palmares opgebouwd. Hij begon als jonge snaak als gitarist bij The Revelators, die hun platen uitbrachten op het legendarische Crypt Records. Daarna kwamen de Hard Feelings, met platen op Sympathy For The Record Industry en Gearhead. Hij ging als extra gitarist mee op de hort met RL Burnside en Hasil Adkins en vond ondertussen ook nog eens te tijd om zelf, in zijn eentje, twee platen voor Voodoo Rhythm te maken. Zijn derde houdt tegenover 'John Schooley' (2005) en 'One Man Against The World' ('07) een lichte koerswijziging in. Bluegrass, gospel en blues vormen meer en meer de inspiratiebron. Artiesten als Blind Lemon Jefferson, Jimmie Rodgers en zelfs Don Van Vliet vormen zijn voedingsbodem. Het gros van de instrumenten speelt de man gewoon zelf, tegelijk als een echte onemanband uiteraard. Drums, gitaar, banjo, doubleneck, bas en harmonica doet hij zelf. Handjeklap, de fiddle, de computer en additionele harmonica (van de man die het instrument introduceerde in heel wat punky bands: Walter Daniels, onder meer bij Revelators, Oblivians, Jack O' Fire, '68 Comeback, South Filthy) besteedde hij uit. Instrumentale stukken wisselen af met behoorlijk chaotische punkrockachtige nummers, terwijl bluestrash in elke porie zit verweven. Blue 'n' Blackgrass noemt hij zijn muziek zelf. Luister naar het titelnummer, 'Boo Hoo' of 'Snowdrop' en ontdek de kwaliteiten van deze artiest pur sang. Een punkattitude, rootsy aandoende muziek en een mengeling van eigen nummers en traditionals, meer hoeft dat niet te zijn. THE NATIONAL EXAMINER (USA) Austin-based bluesman and rocker John Schooley has composed and recorded a fresh 12-song album of one-man band brilliance and lunacy on Voodoo Rhythm Records. The Man Who Rode the Mule Around the World is Schooley's first full-length release since 2007's One Man Against the World. While he has kept his core sound of old dirty blues, Appalachian country, and raging rock and roll intact -- and is still unmistakably the John Schooley many have come to know and appreciate since his debut self-titled one-man band album in 2005 -- there are some differences between the two albums. The main difference, really, is that he has dialed down the rock and roll a bit to embrace more of a bluegrass vibe. That doesn't mean he doesn't occasionally go musically wild on his foot drum setup and double-neck guitar. The Man Who Rode the Mule Around the World opens with an instrumental piece, "Clawhammer Banjo Medley," a reworking of a song whose origins are lodged in "June Apple," "Kitchen Girl," and "Boatman's Dance," with driving foot drums and skilled and steady banjo pickin'. Next up, we have the title track, which starts out rootsy and subdued, with a thin background of well-placed feedback, and then picks up into a blues punk frenzy before unraveling by stages into a wash of artistically arranged noise. From there, he gives us a mixture of originals and covers: "Doubleneck Stomp," "It's Git Down Time," and "Doubleneck Rag" being some of the former, and "Boo Hoo" (Marvin Rainwater), "Snowdrop," and "Look Out Mabel" being some of the latter. RENFIELD (DE) Sie scheinen den John Schooley bei Voodoo Rhythm wirklich zu mögen. Hätten ja sonst nicht schon das dritte Album von ihm an den Start gebracht. Ist aber auch zu sympathisch, dieses One-man-Band mit allem was klassischerweise dazugehört: Gitarre, Bass-Drum, Harmonika, Einflüsse aus Blues und Country, hoher Trashfaktor und viele Verweise auf die erklärten Vorbilder R.L. Burnside und Hasel Adkins. So kommt eine ganz solide, schwungvolle Trash-Punkscheibe zustande. Die ganze Platte kann man ganz wunderbar in einem Rutsch durchhören (was hier mehrfach passiert ist), würde ich jedoch nach meinem favorisierten Song gefragt, würde ich wohl so bescheiden gucken wie der Esel auf Weltreise. Was es mit dem eigentlich auf sich hat und wer der Mann ist, der ihn geritten hat – bleibt das Geheimnis von John Schooley. (K) Gary Flanell |
